Student protests documentary reaches over 7,000 hits on youtube! (Week 9)

This week was a training week for news and production – a lots of winol team members perfected packages and learnt new roles in the galery and the studio.  By looking at the pieces we have done in the past some of us had a chance to work on last touches and even redoing parts to packages to make them better, having out tutors looking over our shoulder and advising on how to perfect them. My feature reporters were not only perfecting some of their packages but also had practiced in the studio.

My team also worked trying to perfect some of the work:
Justyna- redoinng the £20 food challenge
Claire and Katie - voiceover for the autumn fashion piece
Jake- did not perfect any of his packages said he would go to a concert at the weekend and along with Hanna will make a review on it for next week (not completed in week 10)
Hanna- did not perfect any of her work, I gave her idea on dating website review
Thom- continued working on the given ideas
This week we also gained one more feature reporter, Andy Giddings decided to join us and staart working for us from next week ( I have introduced him to the world of features, spoke about the formats, deadlines and meetings, on the weekend we also descussed some of the potential ideas he could staart researching on and possible formats that they couldbe executed as).
The film has reached astonishing number of hits 7, 306 !!! (29/11/10)
This is the version we played instead of the bulletin on 17th November 2010.

For Maddie and I it was a big week, she joined me on worki9ng on the documentary from the student protests demo filmed last Wednesday and after we combined powers and footages that our two teams managed to get we were ready for a great adventure with... very lengthy and tiring editing. And couple of full days and nights of editing our film was ready to be uploaded on Wednesday afternoon. The decision was that it was meant to go out instead of the winol bulletin as ‘Winol special’ as 5pm

Good tips that we have received this week from our guest from ITV, sports commentator:
We always need to remember that news/features stories are about people that are going to make an impact on other people's lives- people that are going to make a change. To be successful in this trade as journalists we have to find our passion within the profession. When using GVs/ pictures it is essential to write to the pictures as working on telly is very much about pictures. These days journalism is very much about film rather than print, pictures give more impact attract the attention quicker than a headline. Pictures are making the story and the content of voice-overs or PTC is like a cushion for it. When talking about the script we have to find the right words to say at the right time, key phrases that will reflect our pictures well. It’s also essential to think about our audience as the key to choosing the language lies in the type of audience we are directing our message at. If it if for print, good tip for features was to ‘paint our story with words’, whereas in broadcast simple impacting words and phrases are needed. For presenters, crucial tip was to always prepare and revise but stay open for improvisation. When presenting or writing we should not assume the knowledge of our audience we should treat every story as if it was told for the first time at all times. Never try to be bigger than the story while presenting or making a presenting led package, find the balance to be able to still have and take an opportunity to show the personality.

Industry wise, ‘passion will keep the drive going’ and bring the thoughts that this is what we have always wanted to do. Working within new media and fast moving industry is a challenge for everyone, power of mew technologies change face of journalism.

For a start we should get ourselves published, get ourselves noticed using all the up to dated social networking devices/ websites like facebook, blogging or tweeting. Stay on top with latest technologies. We should try to show our personality and uniqueness that will make our future employee to pick us.
And finally, always be sensitive as journalist or broadcaster as you are dealing with changes of people’s lives.

This week I decided for us to plan to do a winol show based in the studio, showing our selected packages and having Laura Barton from the Guardian as our guest on the sofa. The plan was ambitious but since she was meant to come over as our guest for winol we were half way through with our organisational part. I informed the team about the plans and Paul was very happy to get involved.

Updates on reporters’ work and new ideas:
1. Behind the scenes of feature making film, by Justyna – was finished, however after I had gone through it, I decided that it should still be worked on before it is uploaded onto the website. The footage was quite good and had good pictures, but audio was pretty week and the editing needed more tightening. It has a good potential and I like the idea but I decided to give it a little but more time to be re-edited. (to be re-edited for week 9- not completed-promised to complete for week 11)

2. Investigative article on depression because of being off work written by Stu- uploaded onto the site as a news article- I still have to chase it up to have an extended version of it for features from him. (completed but only in the news article not for features)

3. News feature article on a historic mansion that was going to be taken down, by Gareth from news (his idea was more suitable for features and so I suggested he does an article for me with lots of good pictures. (not completed yet-to be chased- promised to have it completed by week 10, failed, I will chase it up)

4. Student version of the come dine with me, in which the whole team was involved – last meal was filmed on Monday this week and Claire and Katie took a role of editing – their first deadline was going to be the end of Wednesday this week and so the feature would be ready to be published in next week (wk 8). (to be edited and uploaded in week 10)

5. Restaurant Review, places to eat out for students, by Claire and Katie – girls decided that their film was not ready to even show it to me, I appreciated self criticism however I decided that I would still like to see it and make a judgment myself whether it is worth working on and how could e improve it. (to be chased-filmed, editing in progress- still in week 10)

6. Comment piece by Bishop of Winchester on last week’s bible ripping incident at the student union, by Thomas Hobbs (completed- to be uploaded in week 9) after we have received the confirmation from the Bishop that all the transcribed text is ok for us to be used and published onto the website)

7. Budget Cuts article- in depth analysis of the Browne’s review by Thomas Hobbs (not completed yet-to be chased after, awaiting the decision on the fees)

8. Wine tasting show in London, gonzo style feature by Claire and Katie filmed on 11thNovember, which is this week. Girls had everything planned, organised permission for filming, press passes and even a possibility of a ticket fare claim back. (Filmed and to be finished and uploaded in week 10)

9. Dating websites review by Hanna Keegan

10. Katie and Claire are adding voice-overs on to their autumn fashion piece

11. I advised Thom Hobbs to cover Akala’s concert that will be played at the Railway Tavern- he agreed.

12. Jake and Hanna - concert at the Railway Tavern on the weekend- to be completed for week 9 (not completed in week 9, they didn't end up going)

This week I have also learnt how to use LiveStreem program while Paul and I were uploading Maddie’s and mine London Demo documentary onto winol website.

LiveStreeming
- Sign in (get an invite to be able to join the site- have to ask Chris about it)
- Get started
- Studio channel
- copy the link from the youtube that we want to import
Go to – MANAGE LIBRARY – then copy and paste the youtube’s link here
Go to- New story board (at the bottom – intro)
- import from youtube – IMPORT (on the right hand side)
drag and drop it onto the livestreem (this is the most fragile process as it can easily fail)
- at this stage the film will be converted
- Control Auto Pilot
- Restart Auto Pilot
Playlist
And from there it’ll be looping the film
