Week 10 Safety tips on hostile situation and preparing for the BJTC competition

Week 9 of the first semester started of training on safety tips on hostile enviroment while out and filming and preparing our London demo documentary for the BJTC competition. I also spent most of my time also making panoramic photoessays for winol features alongsite managing the team. Also band Dave performed for WINOl in the studio, our feature team and production produced the film featuring one of their songs 'I keep my heart locked up' . Additionally, I helped with the prodction of bulletin for primary school children on Tuesday (Autoqueue, cameras, studio floor managing etc).

First thing on Monday morning we were reminded of the safety tips in hostile environment.

Completing a Risk Assessment form and having it signed of by an authorised person is essential. We should always remember to have a good plan put in place before going filming. Plan of action can save your lives and we should be prepared for the worst, in that way there will be nothing to surprise us. The safety root (root of exit) has to be memorised and seen to be available at all times. We should always stay in communication with the relevant people. On the aspect of good communication it is also worth taking a mobile charger with in case our battery runs out. Moreover, it’s good if we have a number for the landline written down (for the newsroom) in case we are in the situation where we could only use a landline to contact relevant people. We should also have a so called ‘fixer’ (minder) – someone who sets things up prior to our arrival). If we are threatened, we should give everything up (filming equipment or wallet) and if there is possibility for us to be arrested do not resist it, go on the ground and do not tense yourself. It is important we stick with someone knowledgeable who we can trust and rely on. It’s good to have established meeting up points and also know where the closest hospital is. Further point would also be to know or be aware whether we have a friendly solicitor that we could rely on in case we happen to be in a complicated situation.

This week our WINOL team was advised to prepare the packages/films that we would like to send off for the BJTC – re-edited version as well as experiences described in the post here

This week’s news bulletin: 24/11/10

Updates on reporters’ work and new ideas:

1. I made couple of photo-essays in final cut pro to made our website look more attractive and to practice my editing skills as well as use photographs I collected from my travelling, I’m planning to do it on Wales, Scotland and Cornwall. I also asked Jason if he could do one on England views and in that way we would cover the whole UK views – UK photographed by Winchester students.

Wales Photographed- photoessay by Veronica Frydel

Scotland Photographed – photoessay by Veronica Frydel

I photographed views of Wales, Scotland and Carnwall during my holidays and transferred them into photoessays using Final Cut Pro.

2. Behind the scenes of feature making film, by Justyna – was finished, however after I had gone through it, I decided that it should still be worked on before it is uploaded onto the website. The footage was quite good and had good pictures, but audio was pretty week and the editing needed more tightening. It has a good potential and I like the idea but I decided to give it a little but more time to be re-edited. (to be re-edited for week 9- not completed-promised to complete for week 11)

3. News feature article on a historic mansion that was going to be taken down, by Gareth from news (his idea was more suitable for features and so I suggested he does an article for me with lots of good pictures. (not completed yet-to be chased- promised to have it completed by week 10, I will chase it up)

4. Student version of the come dine with me – Who is the Hostess with the Mostess - to be finished edited and uploaded in week 10

5. Restaurant Review, places to eat out for students, by Claire and Katie - planed for week 10

6. Comment piece by Bishop of Winchester on last week’s bible ripping incident at the student union, by Thomas Hobbs (completed and uploaded to winol)

7. Budget Cuts article- in depth analysis of the Browne’s review by Thomas Hobbs (not completed yet- to be chased after, awaiting the decision on the fees)

8. Wine tasting show in London, gonzo style feature by Claire and Katie covered on 11th November has been started on editing but not finished for this week (to be finished and uploaded in week 10).

9. Dating websites review by Hanna Keegan – Hanna has been ill (decided not to go with it- not completed)

10. Andy brought few good ideas into our team. Richard Cheetam, programme leader and Development at our university has attempted to cross the desert Atacama and agreed to give him an interview. It will be Feature interview using the photographs from Richard’s expedition and race throughout the desert.

He also wanted to do an investigative piece on whether the Christmas decoration is being put to early, I advised not to go with that idea because we were relevantly close to Christmas already and it could be classed as out of date. (Spiked idea)

10. Katie and Claire are adding voice-overs on to their autumn fashion piece, editing the wine show and editing the restaurant review

11. Thom Hobbs - Akala’s concert played at the Railway Tavern (completed and uploaded nto website)

12. Also Thom has transcribed his interview with bishop and I listened to the whole interview to check for accuracy and that Thom informed the bishop of the purposes of the interview. I also advised Thom that I would like to see the consent in writing via email from bishop’s site agreeing for publication of the transcribed text.
He also brought an idea of covering Anniversary of Keits poem which was significant for Winchester. Thom already arrange the interviews and I liked the idea. (to be done for week 10)

Thom is also planning to get Steve Bishalti (bbc sports ancor) to write a comment piece on strikes at NUJ.

Thom said he would also cover concert of Skinnyman (English rapper) - to be done for week 10

13. Win With Winol and What’s on is planned and will be resented by Kayleigh James
Kaileigh will be in charge of what’s on and Thom Hobbs has been continuously been writing script for Win with WINOL and Paul editing. Every time, the feature team have been present during recording helping within the production.

Win with what’s on presented by Kayleigh James and Lucy Piligrim as well as band Dave performing in our studio and Kayleigh interviewing them after the song:

Our features team and production team made sure we prepared the studio for this week’s band playing in our studio. We filmed band Dave who performed for us on Tuesday evening this week. Kayleigh interviewed the band after the performance and edited the film.

18. Justina is redoing few parts of the £20 challenge and reedited it to make it ready for the BJTC

19. Jake brought an idea of setting himself up a challenge of living with a baby-doll that he would have to look after as if that was a real baby and film his experiences (to be done for week 10)

I have mentioned to everyone about the opening of the Christmas market and ice ring as well other attractions that are here in Winchester worth covering. Jake agreed to take up that idea (Justina and Kaileigh wanted also to get involved)

This week’s Tuesday I spent pretty much all in the studio helping with the production. Win with What’s and kids from primary school bulletin an dthen Dave band performing in the studio.

I also focused on the layout of the website, i requested to have the column done on the right hand site, upload the films and add links of what’s popular and the latest. I also wanted the gonzo journalism – shadowing film that glenn and I have done last year to be there. I wanted to make sure that whoever is responsible for the page layout works exceptionally hard to make sure of an attractive and also week functioning and neat website.

As I have noticed looking at the past few weeks some of the commitent levels in my team has loosen up unfortunately for some of them. I have prepared a list of reminders and a speach to give on Monday meeting in week 10 to try to keep the spirits up and remind my team about the importance of being consistant and delivering what's promissed. More on how it went in the post on WINOL week 10 which will also feature our very own WINOL LIFE show with a special guest LAURA BARTON from the guardian.
