WINOL Features in week 6 – Halloween and the debate help the bulletin

In week four of our Feature production, we can allow to give ourselves a little bit more time to work on our quality of videos. My team should definitely try to produce few better written pieces as for now we are not fully skilled in that area. Even though videos genuinely take up a lots of time efforts and skill, good written pieces is what we should have a look into and work on.

1. Over the weekend I thought that it would be great if we cover Halloween’s outfits fashion because of the oncoming Halloween:

I felt that it would not only be very relevant but also a good opportunity for my reporters to be creative and use the studio to practice fashion production. I contacted my team and Hannah and Justyna were the first ones to reply and therefore they took care of covering that feature for this week. I was filmed the whole feature trying to give advice and show how girls will have to do it themselves next time.

2. I am going to make a photoessay from behind the scenes of feature making of our Autumn trends fashion – I have completed it and uploaded it onto youtube, also gave a copy to Paul who has also uploaded it onto wino’l youtube – I completed it at the beginning of this week:

3. I decided that the idea for the debate on religious views (opposite views of the matter)is not the best idea and advised Thom to think of other subject for debate. Thom has managed to arrange three guest to come in for Tuesday 12am who agreed to take part in the debate on the subject the current budget cuts. I advised Thom to keep the debate to 10min and make sure of a good balance. Unfortunately I could not be involved in supervising the content being produced as there were lack of people in the production side and I had to take over filming it. Thom has tried his best as a presenter, but as well noticed by Chris the whole process should have been directed by Thom and presented by someone else rather than presented by Thom, that is certainly something to look into in the close future. Executing the debate and balancing it became a fantastic case study for all of us. Unfortunately I requested Thom to take the debate off the youtube and it was not uploaded onto Winol website because of the complaint we received from one of the participants. It is good that we are receiving a reaction, shame that it was a negative one. I deal with the issue of the debate separately in a post from WINOL week 6- here.

4. Jake was going to do a studio based fashion feature on autumn’s trends for men which he unfortunately did not manage to complete. He told me that his model unfortunately couldn’t make it and therefore I asked him to re-edit footage from the Graduation ceremony instead. As we found out, Amy’s tape (reported who filmed the event) was corrupted and it would not allow us to capture the footage. We tried numerously times on many different computers but unfortunately it wouldn’t work. Also I suggested to use the captured footage that Amy has already worked on but unfortunately she has not kept the scratch disks and because of that we were unable to use the footage she already captured as it was offline. We could not do anything else about it.
On Wednesday Jake was additionally chosen to be a presenter and so whole Wednesday he focused on preparing for that role instead.

5. There is also an ‘All women’s’ show’ at the Guildhall in Winchester on 7th November that I have been forwarded the press passes and permission for filming for. I appointed three of my reporters to cover, Justyna, Katie and Claire. They have unfortunately not completed that task.

6. Katie and Claire are also going to London on 13th November, Saturday for the wine tasting event. Jake will be helping them out with filming. It will be a Gonzo style video on them learning how to taste wine.
7. Also in plans for next week, he whole team is also going to be involved in organising and filming a feature in style of 'come dine with me' – with a different angle to it: ‘come dine with students’ which is going to have a budget of £20 and will be done throughout all week next week. It will have been edited by Wednesday evening in week 7.

8. Justyna is also going to edit a behind the scenes video for features- she completed it at the end of this week. I also send her article about the £20 food challenge back to her to improve it. I gave her time till next week.
9. Another idea was to do a ‘make up makeover with a celebrity’, Katie and Claire had a contact with a celebrity makeup artist that they will try to contact and arrange it (this is still quite unsure).
Justina and Hanna have not given me their plans as of yet and at this stage it does not look like it is going to happen.
10. Stu has promised to finish of the video on two sisters campaign for features but he has not completed it. An article has also not been worked on.8. This week win with winol was planned to be made more interesting and introduce a more challenging competition rule, it was meant to be presented by Lucy, scripted by Thom and edited by Paul again I was supposed to be on camera and supervise the whole process again. Unfortunately we have experienced lots of difficulties with the tape deck at the studio, our tape got stuck and unfortunately there was no one around from the technical help and so we had to postpone it to Wednesday morning. Eventually, It was not completed as promised and I had to help out with the editing of Halloween feature and then I helped out with the production side of the bulletin.
9. Another idea was to organise a contest and host it, 'Quinn and of dramma' xfactor type of program hosted by winol. Details have not yet been discussed and the project would be quite big to realise but we will keep it in mind as part of new ideas for feature section. This idea is not very likely to happen but I will keep it in our back up ideas.

Tuesday proved quite challenging for us, we started of filming the Halloween feature in the studio, which took few hours and then we had to clear the studio and prepare for Thom’s Hot Topics debate on Budget cuts and that was followed by unsuccessful attempts to record Win with winol.

Last three weeks I tried to push my team to collect as much content as possible, I have been aiming to corporate some of the feature pieces into bulletin, making it relevant, creates opportunity to have it mentioned during the bulletin and encourage to come into features for more information on certain relevant matter and even more of great journalism work.

Here is what Chris Ship from ITV had to say about his experiences with WINOL after the bulletin, this week’s gueast editor:

I was also very much involved into winol bulletin production myself, because of that I didn’t manage to focus enough on preparing materials for Chanin however, as it was advised by Brian, Chanin moved the deadline to next week because I was too busy with the bulletin. I was floor managing and main camera operator at the studio. Also thanks to our studio debate on the Browne’s review organised by Thomas Hobbes we have saved the bulletin giving a good angle for Joey to tackle his story on the tuition fees.

Winol bulletin of this week : 27th October 2010

We are slowly going to be moving towards collecting the content to go onto our New Winchester Review magazine. I have continuously been chasing up articles which we have produced and that have somehow been hold during the sub-editing process. At this stage there still have been a lot of issues with tackling the design and layout of the Feature section so I just have to be patient and keep the track of our content that is meant to be uploaded onto the website and that has not yet been. I prepared a list of feature pieces that we have produced for Features so far as Chanin requested and then spoke to Glenn on making sure of having desired articles sub-edited and ready for the following week. As I have been given a date for the launch of the magazine to be 3rd November 2010 (The New Winchester Review.)

The list of feature articles that we have done so far that I have asked Glenn to double check this Monday to have ready for Wednesday were:
Week 2 :
Freshers fashion, Navigation around the campus, On the campus with: Seb Miell, On the campus with james Knight, Staffing Costs increase,
Week 3:
two sisters campaign, navigation around Winchester, Social networking (+film review in it), On the camus with Neil Marriot, On the campus with Katie gardener,
Week 4:
£20 food budget challenge (calendar) , Autumn trends fashion, Jake Gable’s men’s fashion guide, best and worst moments of stars of athletics (Thom’s)
This list was given to Glenn to get ready for next week Wednesday so that Chanin and I could pick and choose the best suitable ones for the website.

Looking at our last three weeks it looks like our On the Campus with have not been a successful style to execute the profile form of the feature and we have been advised to work on the style trying to make it more professional and to definitely work on the written article for them. Even though they are one of the most popular on the site according to alexa, we should definitely work on executing that feature form better. Thom’s Social Networking has brought lots of concern not being clear enough to show which parts are about the film and which are the actual comment. Unfortunately after discussing it with Glenn and Chris, we have decided that it will have to be spiked. Stu’s two sister’s campaign needs working on and after the attempt to pass through the subeditors it was decide that it wasn’t ready for publish. Staffing Costs increase article was also decided not to be uploaded. If it is about the article about the best and worst moments of stars of athletics, written by Thom was a good article, I would even argue that it was the best he had written so far, however unfortunately it wasn’t hitting our target audience directly. It was a big shame but we have to think about our audience and that article was certainly not hitting on spot with it. If it is about videos, the facebbok debate, is planned to be converted into an audio debate (radio type) as unfortunately visually it wasn’t up to scratch and I agreed with Chris that it will be better to give us more time to work on better visual presentation of the debate and not to upload this one onto our features as a video.
